KPFF has a year round Internship Program. We employ several part-time interns during the school year as well as five to eight full-time summer interns. Many of our interns return to us as full-time employees upon graduation. We strive for an intern to experience what it will be like as an entry-level engineer. Interns are involved in various projects and generally assist a more experienced engineer with specific tasks.
Some of the design tasks an intern might complete are:
- Designing gravity framing for a steel, concrete or wood building.
- Designing concrete foundation systems.
- Designing anchorage for medical, mechanical and electrical equipment within a structure.
- Helping to address field questions that come up during construction.
- Checking "shop drawings" which a contractor creates to communicate specifically what beam size they will install in a given location for a steel building, for example. This involves reviewing drawings that a subcontractor has created and comparing them to the KPFF contract documents.
