From our experience at career fairs, interviews, and general conversations with new engineers we have provided a few key questions and answers to give you an idea of what to expect at KPFF.

What does an entry level engineer do?
An entry level engineer will typically be assigned to one or more projects. They will report directly to the project manager for that job. Entry level engineers will perform design tasks and/or construction administration tasks. We expect that our entry level engineers will have lots of questions. We believe in assigning tasks from start to finish so that an engineer can learn not only how to calculate the size of a given member, but also how to mark up and communicate that information on construction documents. We want our engineers to learn engineering practice and also good business practices.

What kind of buildings will I design/draw?
Most of our engineers and drafters work on all kinds of project types and sizes. We work on steel, concrete, masonry and wood buildings. We also do interior additions and/or renovations which often involve metal stud design and equipment anchorage design. Some of our projects are just a few sheets of drawings, whereas others are hundreds of sheets. Our hope is that all of our engineers and drafters become well-rounded over time and are able to design all materials on various project sizes.

What kind of work environment exists at KPFF Los Angeles?
Our office is an open and friendly environment. Everyone is genuinely interested in helping one another to be a great engineer and/or structural cad drafter. We work hard and we enjoy one another’s company. We are a team and we strive to utilize each person’s strengths. We have several monthly social and sports events that help us get to know one another outside of the office as well.

Does KPFF have an Internship Program?
We have a full-time summer internship program and we also hire part-time interns during the school year. We usually hire between 5 and 8 interns for the summer and 1 to 3 part-time interns during the school year. We encourage you to apply for the summer internship program in January or February. We try to complete our interviews in March and make our offers in April. Our interns perform similar tasks to those described above for an entry level engineer.
